Hi Kev,

I concede your comments, we were one Branch with Inv and Fire as sub-brances within the whole entity, but Inv survived the civilianisation of Naval assets which significantly eroded our core purpose, ie security. Never the less it (our era) still remained a very good and efficient Branch and could have been retained in it's entiriety but redeployed in areas more atune to today's climate. Never the less the "white hat" navy wanted to get rid of us and they did. That said, yes I now agree that one tie would be nice, the Military Police have thier own as do numerous other organisations, in essence they are a form of uniform you wear when not wearing a uniform and they do cultivate an espirit de corps something I belive we should all maintain. I was proud to be a member of the Naval Police and I think back to those days with pride and those who know me and have read previous correspondence from me will easily be persuaded to the view that I don't like what has happended. Anyhow all is water under the bridge and I am an old retiree with nothing better to do. However I will look further into the tie matter.

Hope this finds you well, please keep in touch.

Hi John,
I think th idea of one style Naval Police tie available for all to purchase has a lot of merit, and would be fine addition to anybodys wardrobe, I Don't feel that we need to have different ties having read your's and Peter Haggarty's,previous comments in defending the Investigators after all we were all members of the Naval police branch firstly, not inv. or fire fighters.

Has anyone ever thought of Naval Police ties? Does anyone know where they can be made? If there is any interest I will look into it, but, I won't be left out of pocket, nor do I want to make anything from it but there will have to be a minimum amount to purchase. Perhaps we can have a general tie and an investigators tie. If you are interested let me know.

Hi John,
I think we maybe a bit late mate. Information i have treceived is that the sea going NPcox will go under the bosun banner. All investigators will be swallowed by the new defence type investigator. I just wonder who did the research on behalf of the NPC and what officer from the branch condoned it. perhaps someone will own up and tell us?

If the information is correct, i am betting it came from the inside! RIP.

Hi John,
I fear it may already to late. Some info I received is that the NPCOX will not continue in its current form. It is my understanding the the Coxswain's position on board will revert to the Bosun Branch and the Defence investiagtors will do the criminal Investigations. although only 'hearsay' I believe it may have been our own who put the wheel in motion. Perhaps someone will confirm or deny this.

I have just read the format for the new Defence Force Investigation agency, overseen by the Defence Provost Marshal, Col Tim Grutzner. This is what the Army has been after since the advent of the DFDA. Given the outrageous PTE Koscvo stuff up where crime scene investigators were forbidden by command to enter the scene until long after the incident I wonder if this is going to reoccur, even though that matter was the catalyst for reform. Having served in the Military Police, eight years in a Regular Army Field Force unit, as an active reservist,I know their wants and expectations, to them they are the specialists, particulalrly in investigations and they have always wanted to run the show accross the three services. There are some interesting times ahead and I fear for the current Naval Police. Unless of course the current Naval Provost Marshall has the balls to stand up for the service. But then refer back to the late 1980's early 1990's.

Wheel chairs allowed, along with oxygen bottles and if required the kids can fill in for us.
If you are really desperate we will let you off the chain!

To constable XXXXX on the matter of the Masons, what a load of rubbish. It appears quite obvious that you had neither the ambition or the relevant qualities to make a career in the NP or NPC branch.
I was one of the many Poms who came to Australia and joined the NP's, my family and I must have enjoyed the mateship and opportunities the branch gave me because I did 22yrs and enjoyed every minute of it.
I was never in the Masons but attained the rank of Sergeant after seven years and Warrant Officer after eleven years. It wasn't through being affiliated with the Masons, it was through hard work and having goals to get promoted. During my time I served with the UN in Cambodia, was on the project team for the the construction of maritime headquarters, being a member of the RAN Charity Bikeriders raising almost a million dollars for charity and other projects that I volunteered for or Peter Mangan volunteered me for. It was because of the challenges that I had and the support from my wife that enjoyed the NP.
Five X, I think you have been drinking too much Four X.

Well Said Derek Lilliman. It was my experience that performance, attitude and behaviour rather than religion, social or other memberships decided a members future in the Branch. Good to hear from you and I hope life in retirement is treating you kindly. I remember you joining the NP the year before I was posted to HMAS Lonsdale as the Fire and Divisional Officer. Then of course I observed your progress after my return to Sydney in 1973 as the Training Officer/OIC Investigations then OIC NSW and until I retired in November 1981 as DIRNP/NPM. Your 16 years in the NP was recognised by the very things I mentioned above ... Performance, Attitude and behaviour. You were a credit to the NP and to yourself.

DRINKS!

Drinks at Tatt's have been arranged to commence at 1500 Thursday 21 December and go as late as we want. Those who can't make it at that time please 'arrive' when you like.

There is a strict dress code which I request you follow:- long smart casual trousers, long sleeve shirt, cuffs buttoned, smart casual footware. Ladies similar standard.(coat and ties not necessary).

We will have an area of the Long Bar set aside for us, you will find drinks are quite reasonable comparable to most pubs. Smalley eats are arranged but we may have to kick in a couple of bucks.

Ladies are most welcome and encouraged to attend.

Parking: For those who have to drive or have a chauffer there are parking stations in the CBD but given the time of the year I wouldn't count on it. There are no parking facilities within Tatt's.

Might I suggest that those of us who managed to have an old badge stick to our fingers as we posted out bring them to wear at the function.
I would appreciate some names and numbers FAO.

I always found the best way was to treat everyone as an equal, no matter what race, politics and especially religion they followed. Quite honestly who gives a rats?

even though I was from victoria, I was still promoted.

The naval police provided with great friends. It also provided me with a fantasic wife, three beautiful daughters and a mortage. Guess what I still have the lot!

Perhaps we should not blame the Catholics or the masons for the lack of promotion.
On behalf of Trish and myself may you and all your families have a happy and safe Christmas and New Year.
warm regards

Just checked the guestbook and have read some of the comments about Masons and the way people were seen to be looked after...We all know promotion within the branch was hard to get and being such a small branch even made it harder, especially as there were so many professional officers trying to achieve the one goal..get promoted...I joined the branch in Jan 1981 and was promoted to Sgt in late 1986, I achieved this because I was a dedicated officer, but on the same hand I did what I was told, got on with things, and created a mateship with those I worked with, even when I was a Sgt but still had those higher up who up dislike me..but you get that!!!..Whether you were a Mason or not, the site has been designed to reflect on the good times, the memories of those who have passed on...and most important, try reunite as many of the guys as I can thru this site....not sure who Const XXX is but, please leave your name and then maybe we can respond so let's leave it at that!!!..see you at Tatt's...

It is unfortunate that Constable xxxxxxx feels to this day that his service and subsequent level of pension was affected by the fact that he was not a Mason. However, I can assure him that he is mistaken in many of his assumptions. Masons certainly did not control the NP, nor was it a consideration in relation to promotions or selection for specialist courses. If you had 'toed the line' as you put it and demonstrated an ability for promotion I am sure you would have been given the opportunity. He said he 'refused to join the Masons' that demonstrates a total lack of knowledge about the Masonic Lodge, because you cannot 'refuse to join'. You are the only person that decides whether or not you have a genuine desire to become a Mason. Further, you are the only person that controls the progress of your application and whether or not you actually become a member. It is a shame that Constable xxxxxx feels so disgruntled regarding his service in the NP and lack of promotion. He fails to recognise the fact that everyone cannot be Sergeants or bosses and that Constables are the backbone of the outfit and without them there would have been be no NP. The 'DemoniclodgeJohn.O' email address appears to demonstrate some form of hatred or misguided understanding of Masonic matters. He mentions me by name as having become an officer, true I did, but my bosses were not Masons and the Lodge had nothing to do with my promotions or career. My promotions resulted from many years of bloody hard work and a lot of study both within and outside of the Naval environment. I resent the implication by someone that may not even know me or anything about my 30 year career in the Seagoing Service and the Naval Police. I would advise Constable xxxxxx to rid himself of the hatred he carries and the feeling that not being a Mason has affected his career and ultimately his pension. Life is too short to ponder on matters that are not important and cannot be changed. I wish him all the best in retirement and hope he is able to get on with his life and forget about matters of the past that are only causing him concern. Smile, it is infectious.

Hey Guys.

I did the Inv Course as a Senior Constable 1978, the Fire Course in 1979, promoted Sergeant in 1980 and posted
Day Work Investigations after that. I joined the Masonic Lodge in 1981, amongst my reasons were I had two grand fathers, several great grand fathers and several uncles who were long term Free Masons. One of my great great grandfathers was the Grand Master is Queensland and was also the first Mayor of the city of Roma. So don't play the person, I remember the good times I spent in the Naval Police and the many good blokes I served with. Just because a few of us were Masons it does not deminish their worth nor the worth of the majority of those who chose not to be. No one got anywhere because of any affiliation they got promoted on merit. In fact using ones conection with Free Masonry to advance onself is particulalry frowned upon in the craft. In fact my closest friend and one of the Naval Police's finest investigator's is not a Mason or anything else. Gus Dodds got to where he did on merit and he used this expertise to advance himself in the civil arena. Come on fellars ease up.

Len did serve in the Investigations Section in the mid 1960's and again a little later. I remember John Miscamble and Graham Mayes as they joined when I was the OIC Training/OIC Investigations in 1973/75 before taking over as OICNP NSW in 1976. I am also sorry to hear of Graham's passing, so mote it be. Graham and I entered the Naval Police in January 1975 and were in regular contact with each other until I paid off in 1983. We did the NSW Fire Brigade Course in 1979 and Graham went on to be commisioned. Never was there a more suitable person for a commission, he was an all round "good hand". "Barney Rubble" as I used to call him, remember the resemblance; he used to scoff but underneath he liked it,we also pursued another way of life, we entered Freemasonry together though the same Lodge and worked our way up through the Craft together. I make no secret of this and if anyone wants to scoff or make an idiot comment then get stuffed. Graham was a man that I was proud to know, I wish his family all the best and I drink to his memory.

Hi all

Steve, I know that it was a while since I asked you if I could use your site to organise a reunion of ex Naval Police, and I am sorry for the delay.

To business. Mid to late spring 2006 I would like to get a reunion organised at Stirling for all ex members who would like to catch up and just chew the fat etc.
The format would be by popular demand
One format that I was thinking of would be something like
a. Friday night get together for drinks,
b. Saturday bus tour of Leeuwin, Byford (whats left) and Stirling.
c. Saturday night mess Dinner or cocktail party.
Rough cost would be about $120-150 (please do not hold me to the cost)
For anyone who is interested could you please contact me with your ideas at Johandra1@optusnet.com.au
The timing could be moved to the right by popular demand. Also can you indicate if you would prefer partners or not.
If we have enough members from the East who would like to attend I am willing to see if we can get some discount Flts with either the red airline or the silver one (Virgin/Qantas)
At this stage all bets are open. If any one wants to help in the organising please let us know.
I look forward to your responses.

for Ex Station WO This is a one off and will not be re submit by the next shift.

I believe the site should remain in the same format. Anyone is able to visit the site. There are other sites for Scribes, medics, WRANS and so there should there be one for the old docky copper or Black Cap.

The details provided in your website are wide and varied, but all relate to our Branch. The Branch Title has changed over the years since formation in 1913 so I wondered if it would not be more appropriate for the Web Page Title to be 'Royal Australian Navy - Naval Police/Coxswain Branch'. The Naval Dockyard Police as such ceased to exist many years ago and is perhaps outdated as a title. Just a thought, but you may like to think about it. I was recently at a social function and a quite young serving member of the RAN mentioned the 'Naval Dockyard Police'. He was quite amazed when I advised him that he was not even born when that title ceased to exist.

Hi All,

First and foremost farewell Don Copp and Bill Robins, they were from the "real" old school.

I attended a reunion over the weekend and saw a Navy News which wrote about "Ships WO'S". Reading between the lines, they appear to be taking over the role of the Coxswain. Whereas the Coxswain was traditionally the link between the upper and lower decks and the senior member of the ships company, even where WO's were borne, the Coxswain, and his predecessor the Master at Arm was the "Man". Whats happening? Can someone please enlighten this old "Crusher"?

Having already sent a very brief email to Steve saying how I stumbled over this website... or rather Greg Cartmill did (as he is two offices down the passageway from me here at DSA-WA), I thought I had better drop a note into the guestbook.
Firstly, Hello out there to all and sundry. Have been scrolling my way through the guestbook and reading the comments plus checking out the other bits and pieces on this iste. Good to see the history is not lost - well done Steve.

I finished up in October 2000 and whilst on final leave I started 'working' at Defence Security Authority - WA (back then it was Defence Security Branch). Have only done a brief one month period of Reserve employment since then - as Coxswain on ANZAC during a dead Ship Leave Period just after she returned from the Gulf; most of the crew were sent on leave so it was just me, GUNZ (as acting CO) and 13 junior sailors. Good work if you can get it - sitting alongside and getting SGA as well.

So in brief for history purposes - changed over to NP in 1985 after 6+ yrs as a MT; promoted in 1988 (after many enjoyable months or was that years at Spectacle Island - and that was after the obligatory time spent at GI, Zetland and Newington and back to GI - that old photo of the Dock Gates certainly brings back some memories; some I think I will push to the side); so '88 saw me back at GI for a while before heading out to Kingswood in 1991 - usual stuff out there as well as some time as the Regulator with Trev Hawker (whom a ran across about 12 months ago at Thai by the Sea in Waikiki / Safety Bay WA); went sea riding WOLLONGONG in early '92 for the obligatory familiarisation for Coxswain; Aug 92 posted to FREMANTLE (bringing her out of Reserve Service back into the PNF); Jul95 to WATERHEN (Paddy Flynn was XO there for some of that time) until mid '97 when I picked up my buttons and posted to Command Security in Pitt St Sydney(as Assistant Staff Officer Information Systems Security - now wasn't that interesting; considering I had no idea what that entailed); then Jan98 off to the West for ADELAIDE; 1999 saw a move to STIRLING as CPOREG; then Apr00 up to the Submarine world in a WOET billet in the Human Resources section; last job before I paid off.

So that is the brief history - thought I would add it in just for the hell of it.

Again, hello to all, and take care

Cheers

I retired in May 2000, on my 55th birthday, at HMAS Stirling. I had shifted out of the branch in December 1993 when posted to Stirling as the XO and held that job for four years. I stayed in the area until retirement and have stayed here since, mainly because most of my children and grandchildren are here. (Bet some of you have fond memories of those Mangan kids!)
Can't say I long for any of those 38 years in the Navy again, but I made many great mates and would love to hear from any old black caps about old times.

This is a good dit which a lot of Pussers can relate to.

It was the Bicentennial Naval Salute. GI and the rest of Port Jackson is chockers full of warries from every ogean and jack tars everywhere.

Me and LSNP Craig Phillip (Harry) Butler were rostered for duty in Naval Police Boat 1 to conduct water patrols of GI etc.

Had to keep the Sydney Peace Squadron, Paddlers for Peace and Greenpeace away as well as drunken yachties!!

Prior to commencing duty, there was a piss up and BBQ on the "Hill" for NP, Coxn and Sherriffs etc from all the warries. For a small fee there was a scran and an unlimited beer issue except if you were on duty, no beer only goffas.

Not good enough. Me and Harry had a couple and as there was a long night ahead of us in the boat, I got Harry to stash a few gashies (nearly a carton) so we could retrieve them later.

At approx 2100 that night, Boat 1 did a touch and go on the Ferry Wharf and successfully stored ship.

At approx 0400, we were called up on the radio. There was a message for Harry. He was to land at the Caisson because his missus had gone into labour and was on her way to Royal North Shore Hospital.

First sprog is on the way.

I woke Harry (he was having a little lie down) and told him what was happening.

I have no idea how Harry got to the hospital without goig DUI or even remembering the drive. He was as pissed as even when I woke him.

Needless to say, Harry made it to the hospital, Rachael had a lovely baby boy and Harry started on the piss again to celebrate. I guess it saved him having a hang-over for a day. Onya Harry!!
